Johansson Blames Work For Marriage Split

Scarlett Johansson opens up to Cosmopolitan magazine about split with ex-husband Ryan Reynolds.

Scarlett Johansson has put her split from Ryan Reynolds down to the couple’s busy schedules, and insists she “wasn’t prepared to do the work” a marriage requires.

The Lost In Translation star called off her relationship with Reynolds at the end of 2010 and their divorce became final in July.

Johansson now reveals she was unaware how difficult it would be to sustain their union, and admits her hectic career took its toll on the romance.

She tells Cosmopolitan, “Relationships are complicated and being married is a living, breathing process. I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and valleys. I wasn’t prepared to hunker down and do the work… Both of us were extremely busy. We spent so much time apart.”

But the blonde beauty is adamant she has no regrets about the short-lived marriage.

She adds, “I’m a big believer that when something feels right, you should do it. I’m a big believer in instinct. Getting married was the right thing to do because it was natural. It grew out of a romance and love and a desire to have a future with somebody and I was very fortunate that I married somebody who turned out to be the person I thought he would be.”

Expedia 2011 Vacation Deprivation Study Reveals Wide Work-Life Disparity Across Five Continents

Expedia.com®, the world's leading online travel agency, today released the results of the 2011 Vacation Deprivation study, an annual analysis of vacation habits across multiple countries and continents.

BELLEVUE, Wash., Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Expedia.com®, the world's leading online travel agency, today released the results of the 2011 Vacation Deprivation study, an annual analysis of vacation habits across multiple countries and continents. The 2011 study was conducted online among 7,803 employed adults in September and October 2011 by Harris Interactive on behalf of Expedia.com in North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. It reveals who gets – and takes – the most vacation, as well as attitudes toward vacation. Common themes impacting how and where people take vacation include money, romance and disapproving bosses.

At Expedia, we believe travel experiences on vacation are an essential part of living a balanced, meaningful life," said Scott Durchslag, President of Expedia Worldwide. "But perspectives on this differ around the world. Americans can often live to work, viewing vacations as a guilty privilege to be downplayed around the workplace – especially if they are worried about their jobs. Europeans work to live, feeling vacation is a right rather than a privilege. Asians take the fewest days of vacation and spend them secretly checking emails. I am convinced this is a false choice because vacations allow employees to rejuvenate, sharpen the saw, connect with new cultures, and renew their relationships. It is no coincidence that the happiest, well-balanced employees are the most innovative and productive."

Expedia's Vacation Deprivation study surveyed 7,803 employed adults across 20 countries. It asked employed individuals to share the number of vacation days (as distinct from mandated holidays) they take each year, what obstacles they face, where they prefer to holiday and how they behave on arrival. Among the findings:

  • Europeans lead the world in vacationing. On the whole, European workers enjoy considerably more vacation time, as measured by days given and days taken, than their peers elsewhere. The average employed European earns 25-30 vacation days in a given year, and, with some exceptions, tends to use them all. Brazilians treat vacation as the Europeans do – as a vital part of being employed, rather than a luxury. The study showed that Brazilian workers receive 30 vacation days and enjoy every one of them.
  • Americans treat vacation as a luxury rather than a fact of life. Americans receive roughly half the Europeans' allotment of vacation time. In 2011, employed Americans earned 14 vacation days and took 12, a decrease from 2010. The median number of vacation days US workers earned in 2010 was 15 days; the number taken was 12. In comparison, the French earned 30 vacation days, and took all 30 in 2011. In 2010, the average French worker used all but one of their vacation days.
  • American vacation habits are more like Asians' than Europeans'. Asia represents the most vacation-deprived region in the 2011 Vacation Deprivation study. Japanese workers trailed the field, taking a mere five vacation days out of 11 available, while South Korean respondents enjoyed seven out of a possible ten days of vacation. Last year, Japanese workers left six vacation days on the table, trailing only the Italians. Italian respondents reported that they left seven vacation days unused in the past year, more than any other nation, though Italians are not precisely vacation-deprived, having 28 days at their disposal.
  • Money and planning are the most commonly-cited reasons for not taking vacation. Overall, 22% of respondents said they believed they could not afford it, and 20% said "lack of planning." The US leads the world in money worries: 1 out of 3 Americans say that they can't afford vacation. However, almost 50% of US workers describe their financial situation as "solid" or "good," which reinforces the notion that Americans view vacation as a luxury. Brazilian respondents, on the other hand, were least likely to see money as a vacation impediment (6%). Brazilians chose "lack of planning" as their top reason.
  • The world's least supportive bosses work in Italy and South Korea. Most workers reported that their bosses are largely supportive of vacation – Americans find that 73% of their bosses are supportive. The reverse was true in Italy (56% boss disapproval) and South Korea (52%), where respondents were most likely to believe management frowns on employee vacations or were unsure. Work/life balance seems to be most prevalent in northern Europe, with Norway and Sweden boasting the highest boss-approval percentages (88% and 82%, respectively.)
  • Most vacationers find it difficult to disconnect from work. The Danish find it easiest – only one in seven respondents from Denmark report that they check email and voicemail regularly while on break, with more than 50% refusing to check in even once. Americans, too, prefer to disconnect when on vacation, with only 25% checking in regularly, and 75% checking in sometimes or never. More than 50% of French, Japanese, Indian and Italian workers remain tightly connected to the office while on vacation.
  • Most people prefer beaches over romance. Globally, beach vacations are king. Twice as many respondents cited beach vacations as their preference, versus "romantic holidays with spouse" – except in South Korea, which overwhelmingly chose "romantic holidays" (45% versus 27% favoring the beach). Romance was the preferred option for the Japanese as well, unlike Argentineans and Mexicans, who were four or five times as likely to select the beach as they were to choose a romantic holiday, a city getaway or an outdoor adventure. The Dutch were the outdoorsiest vacationers, while Singaporeans prefer the city.

Methodology Statement

Harris Interactive® fielded the online survey on behalf of Expedia.com from September 19 - October 9, 2011 in following countries among nationwide cross-sections of the employed adult populations. Also listed with the countries are the total sample size for each country and the makeup of the target audience, either employed adults age 16+ or employed adults age 18+:

North America

United States: 520 employed adults, age 18+

Canada: 1080 employed adults, age 18+

Mexico: 411 employed adults, age 16+

South America

Argentina: 301 employed adults, age 16+

Brazil: 308 employed adults, age 16+

Europe

United Kingdom: 440 employed adults, age 18+

Germany: 402 employed adults, age 18+

France: 409 employed adults, age 18+

Italy: 400 employed adults, age 16+

Spain: 428 employed adults, age 18+

Norway: 300 employed adults, age 18+

Sweden:  300 employed adults, age 18+

Denmark:  301 employed adults, age 18+

Ireland: 301 employed adults, age 18+

Netherlands: 300 employed adults, age 16+

Asia

Japan: 300 employed adults, age 18+

India: 302 employed adults, age 16+

South Korea: 300 employed adults, age 16+

Singapore: 300 employed adults, age 16+

Australia

Australia: 400 employed adults, age 16+

Respondents for this survey will be selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. Each country was weighted using propensity scores* and/or demographic data to reflect the country's employed adult population as a whole. Exceptions to this are Brazil, Singapore and Mexico, which were weighted to reflect the online employed adult population of each country. In India, only three regions were surveyed: Delhi (n=100), Mumbai (n=102), and Hyderabad/Chennai/Bangalore (n=100). These three regions were then weighted together to reflect their population size.

For the global 20-country total, an additional post-weight was applied to adjust for the relative size of each country's employed adult population within the total adult population across all countries surveyed.

All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words "margin of error" as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Cyrus’ ’stoner’ Remark Was Sarcasm, Says Rep

Miley Cyrus' reps are speaking out about the teens pot addiction.

A representative for Miley Cyrus has insisted the teen star was joking when she told revellers at her birthday party last week she’s becoming a “stoner”.
The former Hannah Montana star celebrated turning 19 at a bash in Los Angeles, and pals presented her with a cake in the shape of pot-smoking reggae legend Bob Marley.

Cyrus, who was caught on film last year puffing on a bong, giggled, “You know you’re a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake – you know you smoke way too much f**kin’ weed.”

But a rep for the singer/actress tells Access Hollywood, “The cake was a joke and Miley was being sarcastic. It is being completely taken out of context.”

On Sunday, Cyrus’ pal Kelly Osbourne, who was at the party, took to her Twitter.com page to tell fans Cyrus’ comment was a joke.

Christian Bale is Done with Batman

Christian Bale says he's done being a superhero.

Batman Begins star Christian Bale is hanging up his cape for good – his upcoming superhero movie will be his last.
The actor took on the role for the first time in 2005’s Batman Begins, before returning to the part for the acclaimed The Dark Knight in 2008, which pulled in over $1 billion at the global box office.

Bale has donned the Caped Crusader’s cowl for a third time in director Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, which will see him fight both Bane and Catwoman, played by Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, respectively.

But the American Psycho star insists the next installment will be the last time fans see him play Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego.

He tells the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “I wrapped (filming) a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that cowl off.

“I believe the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and Chris – that will be the end of that Batman era.”

QB Matt Leinart hurt in Texans’ victory vs. Jaguars

If the Houston Texans are going to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, they might have to do it with their third-string quarterback.

MARK LONG Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If the Houston Texans are going to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, they might have to do it with their third-string quarterback.

Matt Leinart injured his throwing shoulder, overshadowing Houston’s 20-13 victory against the offensively inept Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Arian Foster ran for 65 yards and a score, Leinart delivered a perfect touchdown pass to Joel Dreessen before leaving the game and the Texans (8-3) sacked Blaine Gabbert six times. It was good enough for their fifth consecutive win, which moved them a little closer to clinching the AFC South.

But Leinart’s shoulder could be a serious setback.

The Texans already lost starter Matt Schaub for the season with a right foot injury. Now, they are down to T.J. Yates and newly signed Kellen Clemens.

Yates completed 8 of 15 passes for 70 yards in relief of Leinart, doing just enough to help the Texans beat the Jaguars (3-8).

Jacksonville benched Gabbert in the fourth quarter. Luke McCown led the team to a late field goal, but his fourth-down pass with about a minute remaining fell incomplete.

Leinart and Schaub stood next to each other for the final snaps, Leinart in a sling and Schaub in a walking boot.

Leinart, making his first start in two years, was hit hard by defensive end Jeremy Mincey late in the second quarter. Leinart completed 10 of 13 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, a 20-yard pass to Dreessen under heavy pressure. He got hurt on the next possession.

Yates replaced him and drove the Texans into position for a field goal that put them ahead 20-10 at halftime.

That was enough to beat Jacksonville, which outgained Houston 255-215 in total yards.

Luke McCown, named the starter five days before the season opener and then benched after two games, replaced Gabbert for the final two series. But he failed to do enough for a comeback.

McCown was 7 of 11 passing for 62 yards. Gabbert was 13 of 29 for 136 yards, with an interception.

The Texans finished with seven sacks, four of them coming from Connor Barwin.

Maurice Jones-Drew was the lone bright spot for Jacksonville’s offense. He ran 18 times for 99 yards and caught four passes for 67 more.

Tight end Marcedes Lewis, all alone in the end zone, dropped a pass that would have put Jacksonville ahead 14-7 in the second quarter. Instead, the Jaguars had to settle for a short field goal and a 10-7 lead.

Jacksonville’s only touchdown came on Ashton Youboty’s 38-yard fumble return on the opening series. Foster fumbled for the first time in 172 carries this season, coughing up the ball on Paul Posluszny’s tackle.

Foster bounced back with a 43-yard gain on the next possession and later scored on a 1-yard plunge. It was his fifth consecutive game with a rushing touchdown.

Neil Rackers made it 17-10 with a franchise record-tying 53-yard field goal into a stiff breeze. Jacksonville’s Josh Scobee missed a 55-yard attempt, which gave the Texans a short field for Yates.

Andre Johnson, back in the starting lineup after missing several games because of a hamstring injury caught two passes for 22 yards.

SAN FRANCISCO -- As the holidays grow near, Zoosk, the social dating network, recently surveyed more than 2,500 singles to gather their thoughts on the best – and the worst – of the holiday dating scene.

"The holidays can be an especially stressful time for singles as they navigate bringing a date to a holiday party, selecting the right gift for a date, or even bringing someone home to meet the parents," said Jeff Titterton, VP of Marketing at Zoosk. "Zooskers weighed in on how they feel about these tricky situations and the results of this survey hopefully give guidance to others who plan to have an active dating life this holiday season."

The survey findings include:

The majority of singles plan to bring a date to a holiday party this year.

  • 58% of singles say they plan to bring a date to a holiday party this year, be it the office holiday party, a gathering among friends or a New Year's Eve Bash.

Men and women have a few fears about bringing a date to the office holiday party.

  • 39% of men say they would not bring their date to the office party because they are "afraid that co-workers would hit on her."
  • 49% of women say that they would not bring a date to the office party because they would be "mortified if my date got drunk at the party."

If you're brought home to meet the family, bad behavior could get you the boot.

  • 69% of women say they would break up with a guy if they brought him home for the holidays and he was rude to their parents, didn't get along with their siblings, or didn't like the family pet.
  • 60% of men say the same.
  • Men and women agree – the worst offense of all is if a date is rude to your parents. Game over.

Singles welcome the mistletoe!

  • While some may avoid walking under mistletoe, they're probably not single! 82% of single men and 76% of single women say they welcome mistletoe because it's a great excuse to give somebody a kiss.

The data for this report was collected in two separate surveys conducted by Zoosk online in August 2011 and in October 2011.  The August survey fielded 1,000 responses from singles in the U.S. who use Zoosk; the October survey fielded 2,591 responses from singles in the U.S. who use Zoosk.

When "Most Popular" Isn't A Good Thing: Worst Passwords of the Year - And How to Fix Them

If you're one of those people who thought it was clever to use "password" as your password, it's time to wisen up and make a change. Switching the "o" to a zero to make it "passw0rd"?

LOS GATOS, Calif. --If you're one of those people who thought it was clever to use "password" as your password, it's time to wisen up and make a change. Switching the "o" to a zero to make it "passw0rd"? Not much better. Both are on the list of the 25 most common passwords used on the Internet this year, according to SplashData, a well-known provider of password management applications.

"SplashData Reveals Its '25 Worst Passwords of the Year' List For 2011, With 'Password' (Yes, That's Right) and '123456' Topping the List"

Other common passwords include simple numerical choices like "123456," common names like "ashley" and "michael," and patterns based on the layout of the keyboard like "qwerty" and "qazwsx."  There are also some minor mysteries, like the unusual popularity of "monkey" and "shadow." With an increasing number of sites requiring more complex passwords, some letter and number combinations like "abc123" and "trustno1" are being used more often.

In an effort to encourage adoption of stronger passwords, SplashData, a leading provider of password software for more than 10 years, today released its "25 Worst Passwords of the Year" list for 2011. According to SplashData, the most common passwords on the web are:

SplashData's top 25 list was compiled from files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers, according to CEO Morgan Slain. He advised that if consumers or businesses are using any of the passwords in the list, their passwords should be changed immediately.

"Hackers," Slain said, "can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords. Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft," Slain said. "What you don't want is a password that is easily guessable. If you have a password that is short or common or a word in the dictionary, it's like leaving your door open for identity thieves."

Even though thieves have more sophisticated hacking tools at their disposal today than ever before, they still tend to prefer easy targets, Slain said. "Just a little bit more sophistication in choosing passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online."

SplashData suggests making passwords more secure with these tips:

  1. Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. One way to create longer, more secure passwords that are easy to remember is to use short words with spaces or other characters separating them. For example, "eat cake at 8!" or "car_park_city?"
  2. Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites.  Especially risky is using the same password for entertainment sites that you do for online email, social networking, and financial services. Use different passwords for each new website or service you sign up for.
  3. Having trouble remembering all those different passwords? Try using a password manager application that organizes and protects passwords and can automatically log you into websites. There are numerous applications available, but choose one with a strong track record of reliability and security like SplashID Safe, which has a 10 year history and over 1 million users. SplashID Safe has versions available for Windows and Mac as well as smartphones and tablet devices.

"It's easy to start making your passwords better," Slain said. "Start now; make it a resolution to keep it up and your whole life online will safer and more secure in 2012."

Family of Burn Victim Calls on CPSC to Seek Recall of Deadly Lighter; Establish National Standards

The family of a man who died of third-degree burns when his cigarette lighter exploded in his pocket asked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today to seek a recall of MK lighters, manufactured by the Chinese firm Zhuoye Lighter Company Ltd., and sold by the millions in the U.S.

PRNewswire-USNewswire

STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- The family of a man who died of third-degree burns when his cigarette lighter exploded in his pocket asked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today to seek a recall of MK lighters, manufactured by the Chinese firm Zhuoye Lighter Company Ltd., and sold by the millions in the U.S.

William B. Clemmer, a machinist from Stephenville, Texas, died on May 6, 2008 of severe burns over more than half of his body, after his MK lighter failed to extinguish. Mr. Clemmer was at work on April 10, 2008, when he lit a cigarette, then placed the MK lighter in his pocket. Seconds later, the MK lighter exploded, engulfing Mr. Clemmer's torso in flames. He was promptly transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. His last spoken words were, "My lighter exploded." Mr. Clemmer never regained consciousness and died 26 days later. He was 56 years old.

Testing conducted by lighter expert Dr. John Geremia in the Clemmer case shows that MK lighters suffer defects that result in unextinguished flames and explosions from the escaping butane.

"The testing Dr. Geremia performed showed very clearly how bad design and bad manufacturing turn a disposable lighter into a fire bomb," says attorney Craig Sico of Sico, White, Hoelscher & Braugh, the Corpus Christi, Texas law firm who represented the Clemmer family. "Mr. Clemmer used his lighter as intended – but the MK lighter didn't perform that way, and the result was horrible burn injuries that led to his death."

An examination of Mr. Clemmer's MK lighter revealed debris on the globe seal, which can prevent the lighter from completely sealing its orifice. This allows gas to continue flowing -- just enough to keep a flame burning that is too small to be seen behind the wind screen. In addition, a poorly manufactured metering pad can allow liquid butane to flow unevenly through the orifice. Over time, butane can pass through the orifice in liquid form instead of evaporating into ignitable gas. In Mr. Clemmer's incident, the MK lighter's poorly manufactured globe seal and metering pad allowed the liquid to escape and seep into his clothing. The heat of his body caused the liquid butane to evaporate, which expanded its volume by about 60 times. Once the gas reached its flammable limits, it was ignited by the lighter's small unextinguished flame.

While Canada and Europe have lighter safety standards, the U.S. has rejected establishing such a regulation. Currently, there is only one mandatory lighter standard, which addresses a lighter's child-resistance. In 2001, when a flood of cheaply made lighters began to be exported from Asia, the Lighter Association petitioned the CPSC to adopt ASTM F400, the industry's voluntary safety, as mandatory. The agency's market analysis found that the American market consumes about 1 billion disposable lighters annually. Each year, disposable lighters cause approximately 917 injuries requiring medical attention and result in $31 million in injuries and property damage each year. The agency also found that the cost of compliance for the manufacturer would be nominal, amounting to only pennies per lighter.

Instead, the CPSC has settled for recalling malfunctioning lighters. Since 1988, the CPSC has announced at least five recalls involving a cigarette lighter for failing to self-extinguish.

The Clemmer family filed a civil action against the Zhuoye Lighter Company and settled its claims against the American subsidiary. The family's case against the Chinese company is pending.

The Clemmer family maintains that if the MK lighter had met the industry standard, it would not have ignited in William Clemmer's pocket. In 2006, when the Commission last considered adopting the ASTM standard as a mandatory regulation, the CPSC staff reported that testing showed that 75 to 77 percent of all lighters tested from China failed the ASTM F400 performance requirements.

For this reason, the Clemmers also called on the CPSC to establish a rule requiring lighters sold in the US to conform to ASTM F400 as required in other countries.

"A cheap disposable lighter killed my brother," said Ricky Clemmer. "The CPSC had a chance as far back as 2001 to make sure that these imports were safe, and they didn't take action. Now is the time to fix it. Recall these dangerous lighters and set minimum safety standards so that others don't have to suffer from these preventable tragedies."

Local Business Owners Are Upset about New Parking Ordinance

Local business owners are up in arms over a new ordinance from the city of Houston that will increase the minimum amount of parking spaces required by an establishment.

Houston, TX -- Local business owners are up in arms over a new ordinance from the city of Houston that will increase the minimum amount of parking spaces required by an establishment.

In the future, new restaurants would have to provide 10 parking spaces per 1,000 sq ft (a 25% increase) and bars would have to provide 14 spaces per 1,000 sq. ft. (a 40% increase). Increasing the financial burden of opening a new restaurant significantly.

In addition to this, owners will also be required to lease parking for a minimum of five years.

Via Facebook, owners have rallied together against what they believe is reinforcing "the established corporate restaurant or bar and the idea that our business belong exclusively in strip centers."

In the same posting, the writer goes on to say, "Houston is changing, and we have a responsibility as the future of Houston's hospitality industry AND as Houstonians to object to these proposals."

In a report, ABC 13's Miya Shay speaks with business owner Bobby Heugel on how these changes will affect local restaurant and bars.

Artist and mother-to-be Alison Brierley of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, has been in the news recently for her strange pregnancy cravings. Unlike those that many have heard of from dirt to pickles and ice cream, Brierley has a knack for eating roadkill.

Fancying herself a “roadkill recycler,” Brierley has also been known to cook up animals she finds because she hates seeing the meat go to waste.

In a blog post about her appearance on British culinary competition show, "Come Dine with Me," Brierley shared her enthusiasm for cooking with roadkill:

I am a wild food forager and love anything free of pesticides and growth hormones.  I especially enjoy preparing traffic casualties — proper free range meat that has only had one bad day in its wonderfully organic life!!  My passion for being a road kill chef has shocked and delighted many a friend.  Lol.   I use the fur, feathers, teeth and claws in my art — nothing gets wasted — I use it all!

On having intense cravings now that she's eating for two, Brierley told the British Daily Mail,

“It’s probably because I need all the natural iron I can get at the moment, what with all these extra red blood cells I am making,” she added. “[Roadkill meat] is more gamey than other meat and I love the taste. I also don’t have to feel guilty about eating it because I know it’s had a completely free range and natural life.”

Ban the can or can the ban?

Voters will decide whether to ban disposable containers on rivers.

TORSTEN BLACKWOOD/AFP/Getty Images

Tuesday, New Braunfels voters will be deciding whether to uphold or reject an ordinance prohibiting beer cans and other disposable containers on the Guadalupe and Comal rivers.

The initial ban was made in August by the New Braunfels City Council with  supporters saying that the ban is needed to protect the rivers from trash. Opponents, however, argue that this action would drive away tourists and hurt the local economy.

If upheld, the ban would take effect Jan. 1. Under the ordinance, those found in violation could be fined upward of $500 for having disposable containers on the river.

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) -- Taylor Swift turned a negative into a positive, and it has netted her a special nomination at this year's Country Music Association Awards.

Swift received her first CMA song of the year nomination for "Mean," her spunky rebuttal to cynical criticism. That trophy goes to the writer, not the artist, and is among Wednesday night's most coveted awards in a town where the songwriter is celebrated and revered.

"Respectfully, it's about time," said Scott Borchetta, head of Swift's label, Big Machine Records. "I don't think she gets near the props she deserves for her songwriting. I've been in the business with Taylor for almost seven years now and her songs were great when I met her at 14."

Swift has gotten her share of love for her songwriting. She won a Grammy for best country song in 2010. Nashville Songwriters Association International has named her songwriter/artist of the year four of the last five years — and at 21 she remains the youngest winner of that award. And BMI, the performing rights organization, has awarded her all-genre song of the year once and country song of the year three times.

She's won a trunk full of CMA trophies, including top award entertainer of the year in 2009. But she's never broken through in that songwriting category.

"Mean," a retort to nit-pickers, bullies and perhaps curmudgeonly commentator Bob Lefsetz, was hard to resist. It shows Swift at her best. It's both vulnerable and confident, with an infectious chorus, an upbeat, empowering message and among her most countrified instrumentation built around Swift's six-string banjo line.

The song went to No. 1 on the country and adult contemporary charts.

"Getting a CMA nomination for `Mean' was definitely a jumping-up-and-down moment for me because this song is really close to my heart," Swift said in a statement to The Associated Press. "I'm so thrilled it was nominated for song of the year because it's a song that I wrote on a really, really bad day, but it has produced so many happy days for me since."

With more to come perhaps. Brad Paisley, a six-time nominee in the category, believes Swift has been unfairly overlooked as a songwriter among the industry voters who make up the CMA. He points out that most of the voters are in their 30s and 40s, and older. This year's nomination could be a breakthrough.

"There's no 18-year-old in the world that you talk to who doesn't relate to some of her lyrics," Paisley said. "And in that sense, though, she's laughing all the way to the bank as the voters might be saying, `Well, you know, that's not for me.' That's not fair. In some ways it's even more groundbreaking what she's done. I'm proud of what she's done."

Other nominees in the category are Zac Brown, Coy Boyles, Wyatt Durette and Levi Lowry for Zac Brown Band's "Colder Weather," Kimberly Perry for The Band Perry's "If I Die Young," Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford for Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" and Deana Carter and Matraca Berg for Kenny Chesney's "You and Tequila." The field can be considered wide open with Berg the only previous winner, in 1997, as co-writer of "Strawberry Wine."

Swift might not win, of course. But like the song points out, she's already a winner.

"She's just been on an amazing streak," Borchetta said. "Whatever her surroundings, wherever she happened to be, this is what she saw. And (the songs) are very sophisticated. They're very catchy. She's a brilliant songwriter and if you ask any of the other artists who are hip to her, they know. So I'm thrilled the CMA has acknowledged her."

The CMA Awards air Wednesday on ABC (8 p.m. EST).

Meester’s Mom Attacks Actress As She Faces Life On The Streets

Mother of 'Gossip Girl' star Leighton Meester opens up about life without daughters financial backing.

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester’s mother has taken aim at the actress for allegedly turning her back on the family at a time when they desperately need her financial support.
Constance Meester claims her daughter has cut her off and she and the actress’ younger brother Lex face the holidays without a home now she has stopped aiding them financially.

In an exclusive interview with America’s In Touch magazine, the miserable mom says, “My car was taken away. My house has gone into default, and we can’t afford food. I only have $26 left. If something doesn’t happen soon, we’ll be homeless by the holidays.

“I just got blood work done, and the doctors are pretty sure that I have lymphoma.”

Meester’s mother, who was incarcerated on drug-related charges shortly after her daughter was born, insists she got clean to help her the young girl make it as a star – and she has supported her as she chased her dream, even taking a job as an exotic dancer to “make ends meet”.

When Leighton landed a regular spot on Gossip Girl, Constance imagined that the hard times were over. But mother and daughter fell out three years ago and the actress ended their informal business relationship. Earlier this year she accused her mother of using her monthly cash hand-outs for cosmetic surgery – and the star stopped paying.

And now her mom and brother are pleading poverty in the media.

Constance tells In Touch, “The other night I was looking at homeless shelters, and Lex showed me photos he’d found of a million dollar house she bought in L.A. and said, ‘Mum, how can she do this to us?’”

Okla. quakes rattle nerves, no injuries reported

Earthquake rocks central Oklahoma early Sunday morning with the largest quake to hit the state since record-keeping began.

Associated Press

SPARKS, Okla. (AP) — Oklahomans more accustomed to tornadoes than earthquakes suffered through a weekend of temblors that cracked buildings, buckled a highway and rattled nerves. One quake late Saturday was the state's strongest ever and jolted a college football stadium 50 miles away and was followed early Sunday by a jarring aftershock.

There were no reports in the hours after the quakes of any severe injuries or major devastation.

"That shook up the place, had a lot of people nervous," Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon said of the late Saturday quake, the strongest of a series of quakes. "Yeah, it was pretty strong."

The magnitude 5.6 earthquake Saturday night was centered near Sparks, 44 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, and could be felt throughout the state and in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, northern Texas and some parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, said geophysicist Jessica Turner at the U.S. Geological Survey. A magnitude 4.7 quake early Saturday was felt from Texas to Missouri.

Turner told The Associated Press that the subsequent magnitude 4.0 quake that struck at 3:39 a.m. Sunday was an aftershock centered some 36 miles east of Oklahoma City in the same region. Like Saturday night's quake, she said it was another shallow quake occurring about 3 miles underground, but experts had no immediate explanation for the spurt in seismic activity.

Following the quakes or numerous small aftershocks, several homeowners and businesses reported cracked walls, fallen knickknacks and other minor damage. But in Shawnee, the fire department said one spire on the administration building at St. Gregory University had been damaged and another one was leaning, according to KWTV in Oklahoma City.

An emergency manager in Lincoln County near the epicenter said U.S. 62, a two-lane highway that meanders through rolling landscape between Oklahoma City and the Arkansas state line, crumpled in places when the stronger quake struck Saturday night. Other reports Sunday were sketchy and mentioned cracks in some buildings and a chimney toppled.

"Earthquake damage in Oklahoma. That's an anomaly right there," Todd McKinsey of Moore told The Oklahoman newspaper after the magnitude 5.6 temblor centered 50 miles away left him with cracked drywall.

Oklahoma typically has about 50 earthquakes a year, and 57 tornadoes, but a swarm of quakes east of Oklahoma City contributed to a sharp increase in the number of temblors. Researchers said 1,047 quakes occurred last year, prompting them to install seismographs in the area. A cause of the uptick wasn't known.

Saturday night's earthquake jolted Oklahoma State University's stadium shortly after the No. 3 Cowboys defeated No. 17 Kansas State. The crowd of 58,895 was still leaving when it hit, and players were in the locker rooms beneath the stands at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The temblor seemed to last the better part of a minute, rippling upward to the stadium press box.

"Everybody was looking around and no one had any idea," Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden said. "We thought the people above us were doing something. I've never felt one, so that was a first."

The magnitude 4.7 earthquake that struck the area early Saturday was also widely felt, but emergency officials said no injuries were reported at area hospitals right after that.

"Nothing is destroyed or anything like that," Prague City Police Department dispatcher Claudie Morton told the Tulsa World after the Saturday morning quakes.

A few hours before dawn Sunday, the latest quake set nerves on edge anew.

At the Prague Community Hospital in the region, registered nurse Jessie Plumb said no injured people had come into the emergency room by Sunday morning. But she said she and other hospital staffers felt the 4.0 magnitude quake before dawn while on the second floor of the building.

"It kind of gave a little bit of a shake, a little bit of rock 'n roll," she told AP by phone. "I would say it was 20 or 25 seconds." She said she was anxious because of the number of quakes concentrated in her region in so short a span and the fact that they were so strong.

Saturday's late-night quake was slightly less in intensity than a temblor that rattled the East Coast on Aug. 23. That 5.8 magnitude earthquake was centered in Virginia and was felt from Georgia to Canada. No major damage was reported, although cracks appeared in the Washington Monument, the National Cathedral suffered costly damage to elaborately sculpted stonework, and a number of federal buildings were evacuated.

Turner said the Saturday night quake was Oklahoma's strongest on record.

USGS records show that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck El Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, in 1952 and, before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, a quake of similar magnitude 5.5 struck in northeastern Indian Territory in 1882.

She said an active spate of quakes began occurring in the region in February 2010 and added the latest activity appears to be part of that trend. She also said the magnitude 4.7 quake early Saturday appeared to be a prelude to Saturday night's more potent quake and Sunday's was an aftershock. "If these are going to continue to happen, we can't predict," she told AP.

But she said experts were still puzzling out why the latest quakes were concentrated in such a small geographic area around Sparks.

"The largest earthquake is a 5.6 and we call that the main shock," she said. "Everything before that 5.6 we consider a foreshock including the 4.7. Everything after the 5.6 we consider an aftershock."

Oklahoma Geological Survey researcher Austin Holland told Oklahoma City television station KOTV that the earthquake and aftershocks occurred on a known fault line.

Residents in Prague and Sparks felt an intense shaking, but for those farther away the quake was more of a dull rumble, he said.

"It shakes much more rapidly when you're closer to it," Holland said. "Because it's a large earthquake, it's going to rumble for a while."

The Prague police dispatcher Morton said her office was swamped with calls, mostly from jittery locals expressing their alarm. She said residents told her that picture frames and mirrors fell from walls and broke, drawers worked loose from dressers and objects tumbled out of cabinets.

"Oh, man. I've never felt anything like that in my life," Morton told the Tulsa newspaper. "It was the scariest thing. I had a police officer just come in and sit down and all the sudden the walls started shaking and the windows were rattling. It felt like the roof was going to come off the police department."

Chaos descended on the streets of New York City this week as director Christopher Nolan filmed riot scenes for his new Batman movie.
Shocked bystanders watched as a crowd of extras and actors waving fake guns charged along a Manhattan road in a scene for The Dark Knight Rises, which stars Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader.

Almost 1,000 extras, along with actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt wearing a Gotham City Police Department uniform, took part in the shoot close to the city’s financial district.

Justin Bieber says Lovechild Accusations "won't be the last."

Justin Bieber is steeling himself after it was alleged he impregnated a fan

Justin Bieber is steeling himself after it was alleged he impregnated a fan – because he’s convinced it “won’t be the last” time he’s rocked by lovechild accusations.
The 17-year-old star was left stunned after Mariah Yeater, 20, claimed she fell pregnant after having sex with the singer backstage at a concert in Los Angeles.

Bieber has adamantly denied the rumors, but admits he’s prepared for other women to fabricate similar stories.

He tells TMZ.com, “It’s the first time that something like this has happened, so it’s kind of really crazy. I’m sure it won’t be the last (time) but it’s just sad that it has to happen like this. I mean, it’s just weird that people automatically assume that it was true. But I knew eventually it would die down.

“There’s a lot of people that get accused of different things, especially in my business. It’s something that comes with the territory. There’s a lot of lies that happen and you just gotta focus on what’s important. I stay away from all that stuff. I really have been so busy promoting my Christmas album, I haven’t had any time to be on the computer.”

And the Baby hitmaker insists he’s fed-up of fielding questions about Yeater.

When asked if he’s annoyed with the controversy, he adds, “A little bit. People saying, ‘Are you going to be a father?’ and all this stuff. Someday I will be, but not any time soon.”

Texas Court-at-Law Judge Caught on Video Abusing Disabled Daughter

Judge William Adams' daughter released graphic video from 2004, sparking public outcry

Aransas County court-at-law judge William Adams has been accused of child abuse by his own daughter, Hillary Adams.

Saying she was "holding onto [the video] ... until the right time," Hillary posted a video of her father beating her on to popular link-sharing site Reddit with the caption:

2004: Aransas County Court-At-Law Judge William Adams took a belt to his own teenage daughter as punishment for using the internet to acquire music and games that were unavailable for legal purchase at the time. She has had ataxic cerebral palsy from birth that led her to a passion for technology, which was strictly forbidden by her father's backwards views. The judge's wife was emotionally abused herself and was severely manipulated into assisting the beating and should not be blamed for any content in this video. The judge's wife has since left the marriage due to the abuse, which continues to this day, and has sincerely apologized and repented for her part and for allowing such a thing, long before this video was even revealed to exist. Judge William Adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can't even exercise fit judgement as a parent himself. Do not allow this man to ever be re-elected again. His "judgement" is a giant farce. Signed, Hillary Adams, his daughter.

Popular gossip website Gawker.com reached out to Hillary, her friends, and even Adams himself before receiving confirmation from a friend that the man in the video is in fact the judge.

"I know in the article you say you cannot confirm the man in the video is him, but I can. It's him," Hillary's friend J. Andre Bardin said. "That's his voice, that's his mannerisms, and that is his house."

*Update* Judge Adams has spoken and wants everyone to know that he apologized. According to KRIS-TV's Andy Liscano: Adams said, "It happened years ago ... I apologized." When asked if he thought the conduct in the video was excessive, he responded with, "It's not as bad as it looks on tape." He also informed informed the Corpus Christi station that he has already contacted the Judicial Review in Austin and "more will come out" during the investigation.

In the aftermath of all of this, Hillary sent a tweet to her followers asking that people "stop threatening her father"—who, she believes, "needs professional help and not hatred."

Warning: The video is graphic and prolonged.

Should we move Halloween to Saturdays?

Tim Larson is a Democrat in Connecticut's House of Representatives.  And he wants his state . . . and hopefully the whole country . . . to change the date of Halloween.

Instead of October 31st, it would be the last Saturday in October.  That would make it similar to Thanksgiving, which isn't celebrated on a specific date . . . it's always the fourth Thursday in November.

Larson says his proposal would just make Halloween EASIER for everyone.

Quote, "Halloween is [a] fun night for the whole family, but not so much when you have to race home from work, get the kids ready for trick-or-treating, welcome the neighborhood children, then get everyone to bed for an early morning."

As these things always go, his Republican colleagues immediately cited it as an example of the government trying to interfere in people's lives.

President Obama Announces Plans to Help Cash Strapped College Grads and Students

Seeking to shore up support among cash-strapped college graduates and students struggling with rising tuition costs, President Barack Obama is outlining a plan to allow millions of student loan recipients to lower their payments and consolidate their loans.

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking to shore up support among cash-strapped college graduates and students struggling with rising tuition costs, President Barack Obama is outlining a plan to allow millions of student loan recipients to lower their payments and consolidate their loans.

Outside of mortgages, student loans are the No. 1 source of household debt. Young voters were an important bloc in Obama's 2008 campaign, and student loan debt is a common concern among Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Obama's announcement, to take place Wednesday in Denver, comes the same day a new report is being released by the College Board. It shows average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges rose $631 this fall, or 8.3 percent, compared with a year ago. Nationally, the cost of a full credit load has passed $8,000, an all-time high.

The White House said Obama will use his executive authority to provide student loan relief in two ways.

First, he will accelerate a measure passed by Congress that reduces the maximum repayment on student loans from 15 percent of discretionary income annually to 10 percent. The White House wants it to go into effect in 2012, instead of 2014. In addition, the White House says the remaining debt would be forgiven after 20 years, instead of 25. About 1.6 million borrowers could be affected.

Second, he will allow borrowers who have a loan from the Federal Family Education Loan Program and a direct loan from the government to consolidate them into one loan. The consolidated loan would carry an interest rate of up to a half percentage point less than before. This could affect 5.8 million more borrowers.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan told reporters on a conference call that the changes could save some borrowers hundreds of dollars a month.

"These are real savings that will help these graduates get started in their careers and help them make ends meet," Duncan said.

The White House said the changes will carry no additional costs to taxpayers.

Last year, Congress passed a law that lowered the repayment cap and moved all student loans to direct lending by eliminating banks as the middlemen. Before that, borrowers could get loans directly from the government or from the Federal Family Education Loan Program; the latter were issued by private lenders but basically insured by the government. The law was passed along with the health care overhaul with the anticipation that it could save about $60 billion over a decade.

Today, there are 23 million borrowers with $490 billion in loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Last year, the Education Department made $102.2 billion in direct loans to 11.5 million recipients.

Increases in federal aid have helped ease the burden on students dealing with tuition increases, the White House Council of Economic Advisers said in a report Wednesday.

"Despite large increases in the published price of college over the past four years, the average student has not seen commensurate increases in the net price of college, defined as the published price minus grants, scholarships and tax benefits," the report said.

Meanwhile, the Education Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a project Tuesday to simplify the financial aid award letters that colleges mail to students each spring. A common complaint is that colleges obscure the inclusion of student loans in financial aid packages to make their school appear more affordable, and the agencies hope families will more easily be able to compare the costs of colleges.

Separately, James Runcie, the Education Department's federal student aid chief operating officer, told a congressional panel Tuesday that the personal financial details of as many 5,000 college students were temporarily viewable on the department's direct loan website earlier this month.

Runcie said site was shut down while the matter was resolved, and the affected students have been notified and offered credit monitoring.

Chinese toddler left bloody in hit-and-run dies

A toddler who was twice run over by vans and then ignored by passers-by on a busy market street died Friday.

Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) — A toddler who was twice run over by vans and then ignored by passers-by on a busy market street died Friday a week after the accident and after days of bitter soul-searching over declining morality in China.

The Guangzhou Military District General Hospital said that the 2-year-old girl, Wang Yue, died shortly after midnight of brain and organ failure. "Her injuries were too severe and the treatment had no effect," intensive care unit director Su Lei told reporters.

The plight of the child, nicknamed Yueyue, came to symbolize what many Chinese see as a decay in public morals after heady decades of economic growth and rising prosperity.

Gruesome closed-circuit camera video of last Thursday's accident, aired on television and posted on the Internet, showed Yueyue toddling along the hardware market street in the southern city of Foshan. A van strikes her, slows and then resumes driving, rolling its back right wheel over the child. As she lays with blood pooling, 18 people walk or cycle by and another van strikes her before a scrap picker scoops her up.

Yueyue's death touched off another round of hand-wringing about society and personal responsibility. Many comments posted to social media sites said "we are all passers-by."

Li Xiangping, a professor of religion at Huadong University, said on a Twitter-like service that it is too easy to blame others. "What after all prompted such a sad phenomenon? Officials? The rich? Or is it our own cold-heartedness?" Li said on Sina Corp.'s Weibo.

Police have detained the drivers of both vans on suspicion of causing a traffic accident but have not said what formal charges they would face and if manslaughter would be among them now that the girl has died.

The people who could be seen on the video passing by the injured Yueyue have recounted being harassed for ignoring her. The respected Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper quoted a man it identified only as a hardware merchant Mr. Chen as saying that he had been receiving crank calls ever since someone picked him out as the 16th passer-by. He said he hadn't noticed the child.

Some experts said an unwillingness to help others is an outgrowth of urbanization as migrants pour into cities and create neighborhoods of strangers.

"Rapid urbanization not only affects China or Foshan, but anywhere in the world where you have a lot of high-rise buildings, where there is high population density, then the relationship with the neighbors, and with each other is affected," said Yao Yue, a psychologist and director of telephone help-line for distressed people in Beijing.

Troy Polamalu Fined for Calling Wife from the Sidelines.

Pitsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu will soon be parting ways with $10,000.

Pitsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu will soon be parting ways with $10,000. His crime? Inappropriate gestures in the end zone? Steroids? No, sadly nothing exciting at all. Instead, Polamalu is being penalized for using a trainers phone to call his wife and let her know that after suffering a blow on the field that caused him to be taken out of the game due to concussion-like symptoms, he was fine.

The NFL prohibits players from using unapproved electronic equipment on the sidelines to attempt preventing cheating.

It was his coach, Mike Tomlin, that came to his aid and defended Polamalu, saying:

"He has had a history of concussion-like symptoms in the past. [Mr. Polamalu's wife] was concerned. In this era of player safety, you would think that common sense would prevail in some of these things. It wasn't a personal call. He wasn't checking on his bank account."
